Thursday Spotlight: Lisa Beth Darling

Alpha Males—by Lisa Beth Darling

Fellow children of the 80s out there will remember Bonnie Tyler's "I Need A Hero" from the movieFootloose. She's singing about my guy, he's always "Larger than life and fresh from the fight."

I'm speaking of Ares, God of War, and the lead male in my newest novel The Heart of War. I'm an old fashioned girl in a lot of ways, so perhaps to my own discredit, I prefer an alpha male. I mean…A SENSUALLY DOMINANT ALPHA MALE. The type of man who is the total package and knows it. A man confident in himself and his actions, perhaps even bordering on arrogant. The alpha male is passionate, loyal, will not hesitate to defend his lover or family and he will fight for them (and sometimes with them) until the bitter end. If he's a bad boy, then all the better. I just can't resist a man with an edge. In my day-to-day life, if the proverbial "tall, dark, handsome, broad, muscular, and aggressive man" walks by me… my heart races. If he turns his sultry eyes and his smile toward me, I'm toast. That's it. All done, baby.

I think, if most women out there are honest with themselves, the same is true for most of us. Yes, some of us seek out men like this because we want to 'mother' or 'fix' them. Then we grow the hell up and realize there isn't anything wrong with them, they don't need to be 'fixed' and they sure as hell aren't looking for 'mommy'. We don't want the 'nice guy' we want the 'not-too-nice guy'. We don't want the geeky little nerd. We want the Greek God. We don't want to play it completely safe. We want to take risks and live a little while we're here. We want to play rough and tumble with a man who knows how to play that game with a good deal of expertise.

The geeky guy, the nerd, the too-quiet-walk-all-over-him-and-he-comes-back-for-more guy never cuts it in the end. That doesn't mean they aren't good men, surely they are. They're just not the man for me. Beta Men are for Beta Women but I am Alpha Female and I require an Alpha Male to keep up with my wants, needs, and deepest desires.

That's why I married him. Along with being old fashioned, in the end, I'm an old romantic, too, and I've been lucky enough to be married to my ideal hero for the last 25 years. I'm hoping for 25 more.

Well, honestly I appreciate some alpha traits in a guy but I do know if I could handle a guy that was a pure alpha.

I do like when a guy is protective but not so much that he won't let me do anything for fear I might hurt myself.

Honestly though I don't have a lot of experience with guys, so I don't really know what I like yet.
