Tuesday Spotlight: Mary Abshire
Until a few years ago, I overlooked books if I didn't like the cover. I passed on books by a very well known author because I thought the covers were cheesy. Time passed and I heard good reviews about the books. Curiosity took control of me. I returned to the store and read the blurbs. Okay, they captured my interest. I borrowed the books and read the entire series. Loved them all. And to think I passed on them initially because I didn't like the covers; still don't. Bad mistake.
Another author I love (no names) has covers that are not very appealing. They are okay, but they don't grab me. Yet, when I read the blurb and the little tag lines, I am hooked. I've learned not to judge a book by the cover and I don't anymore. No way!
Bottom line for me as a reader, I'm not going to judge a book by the cover. I'm not hip to animation or non-realistic images. However, if the blurb is good, I'll read the book. Once I dive into the story, I'll know soon enough if I made the right choice. And so far, I have enjoyed every one with a not so appealing cover.
My question to you… Do you pass on books because of their cover? What appeals to you? Is artwork important, or is it more about the story?
